The Road to Self-Care
As escalating healthcare costs continue to be a focus of governments worldwide, consumers have become increasingly attentive to their own health and lifestyle choices.
The Canadian Medical Associations’(CMA) Putting Patients First initiative states “Patient-centered care puts the responsibility for important aspects of self-care and monitoring in patient’s hands – along with the tools and support they need to carry out that responsibility.” The CMA’s validation of the self-care model highlights the dual responsibility by healthcare professionals and consumers in the pursuit towards optimal health. Rx-to-OTC switches is but one step towards that goal.
In recent years, a number of Rx drugs have gone OTC, which has been a boon to consumers who can now obtain medications for allergies or stop-smoking aids without having to deal with a visit to their health care practitioner.
Governments are beginning to view Rx-to-OTC conversion as a cost effective “Switch and Save” opportunity.
